Gregory Orr

GREGORY ORR has said that poetry saved his life, and has expressed deep gratitude to the high school teacher who showed him that poetry was one way to deal with the feelings boiling inside him that he could find no other way to release or express.  For Orr, it is a tragedy that poetry is sometimes perceived as academic or elitist.  He sees it as it is our most essentially human art.  Gregory Orr is the author of numerous collections of poetry, including How Beautiful the Beloved (2009); Concerning the Book that is the Body of the Beloved (2005); The Caged Owl: New and Selected Poems (2002); and Orpheus and Eurydice (2001); City of Salt (1995), which was a finalist for the L.A. Times Poetry Prize.  He is also the author of a memoir, The Blessing (2002), which was chosen by Publisher's Weekly as one of the fifty best non-fiction books of the year.
