Karla Cordero is a Chicana storyteller, poet, educator and author of the poetry collection, How To Pull Apart The Earth (Not A Cult.) a 2019 San Diego Book Award winner and finalist for the International Latino Book Award and the International Book Award. Karla is a recipient of the 2021 Individual Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council and the 2013 Grand Slam Champion, aiding the San Diego Slam Team to rank 4th in the nation at the National Poetry Slam Competition. Her work has appeared in the Academy of American Poets, O-Oprah Magazine, PANK, NPR, The Breakbeat Poets Vol. 4 LatiNext Anthology, among other publications. Karla is a Macondo, VONA, CantoMundo, Pink Door Writing Retreat, Community of Writers Fellow. She is a professor in composition and creative writing at MiraCosta College and San Diego City College.
