Arranging a Dodge Poet Mini-Festival

Dodge Poet Cat Doty visiting a class during the 2008 East Brunswick Mini-FestivalAfter checking the school calendar, a designated Festival Organizer/Contact Teacher should select a preferred date and call or email the Dodge Poetry-in-the-Schools Assistant at (973) 540-8443, ext. 113 or poetryprogram@grdodge.org. To have adequate lead time for planning, expect to set this date at least six months in advance. Please have alternate dates in mind in case Dodge Poets are not available for the preferred date.
Once the date is set, consider the kinds of poets you want to invite. Poet selection is a collaborative effort with the Dodge Poetry Program. Most schools -particularly those planning their first festival - request from two to four Dodge Poets, with school budget and the number of participating students determining this decision. (Please note that the Program does not encourage scheduling sessions for a single Dodge Poet with more than 20 students).

In addition to the preparations described above, the first step in planning a Multi-school Mini-festival is to invite other schools to participate. This invitation, normally issued at least three months before the scheduled date, will include the number of students each school may bring and a general schedule of the day. Two months before the Multi-school Mini-festival, a follow-up communication will give prospective participating schools a two-week deadline by which to confirm their attendance, including the number of students who will be coming.
