The Newark Museum

Did you know that the most extraordinary collection of Tibetan art in the Western Hemisphere is permanently on view at the Newark Museum? The centerpiece of the exhibit is a Buddhist Altar consecrated in 1990 by the 14th Dalai Lama. But that’s not all this not-for-profit museum of art, science, and education offers.  The largest New Jersey museum, the Newark Museum offers 80 galleries of world-class collections including American, Asian, African and Classical.

On the premises is the Ballantine House, a National Historic Landmark Victorian era house once owned by the founder of Ballantine Beer Brewery. Explore the museum’s science collections, from live animals in the Mini Zoo to space travel in the planetarium.  Stroll through the museum’s beautiful sculpture garden, visit the museum shops and enjoy a delicious lunch or snack at the attached café.

Now on view:  Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement.  This exhibition is the first comprehensive examination of the life and work of the recognized patriarch of the American Arts and Crafts movement – Gustav Stickley.  From his earliest influences to declining fortunes, the exhibition explores Stickley as a business leader and design proselytizer, developing a body of furnishings, architectural and interior designs, and related imagery which became synonymous with the artistic ideal of the American Arts and Crafts movement.  Come see furniture, metalwork, lighting, textiles and architectural plans created by the patriarch of the American Arts and Crafts Movement.
