Aljira, A Center for Contemporary Art

Aljira FrontThe word aljira comes from the Australian Aborigines and refers to a utopian dreamtime, implying open possibilities. Against this backdrop, a group of young artists founded Aljira in 1983 with a mission to seek out the work of emerging and under-represented artists and bring the work of more established artists to the Newark community. Through the visual arts Aljira bridges racial, cultural and ethnic divides and support community-based educational programs.
