Waterloo Village

Waterloo Village

The Village of Waterloo was re-opened by the State of New Jersey for the audiences attending the 2008 Dodge Poetry Festival. The Village, where the Festival was inaugurated in 1986, is an important lock and plane stop on the Morris Canal, surviving as a restored symbol of 19th century existence. Once renowned for its superior iron during the 18th and 19th centuries and a 30,000 ton commercial Ice House, the prosperous village evolved into a quiet residential hamlet by the beginning of the last century as the Morris Canal became obsolete.

The Village contains many historic buildings including a Blacksmith Shop, Apothecary, Grist Mill, Saw Mill, Gunsmith, Pottery Barn, Broom Maker and several Colonial and Victorian homes. It is a National Registered Historic Site in the Skylands region of New Jersey.
