Teacher Day
Friday, September 26
Approximately 1,500 teachers from 30 states and from every classroom level attended TEACHER DAY in 2006. We expect 2,000 teachers to attend TEACHER DAY on September 26, 2008. The size of the group at each event will vary depending upon the site and the nature of the activity. Some main-stage sessions will involve the whole Festival audience, other events may involve 200-300 teachers, while some will involve fewer than 50.
Pre-Registration for teachers is now closed. On Teacher Day, please come to the Festival with a valid Teacher ID to purchase a ticket at the discounted price of $10.
During POETS ON POETRY sessions, Festival Poets discuss their own sense of poetry, partly through reading and discussing poems by others that have been important to them, and partly through reading and discussing their own poems. Time will be put aside to respond to questions from the audience.
Several afternoon CONVERSATIONS bring together two to four Festival Poets to discuss some of the enduring questions evoked by poetry. These Conversations have included such topics as “On the Life of the Poet,” “Going Public with Private Feelings,” “Poetry and Jazz,” and “The Mysterious Life within Translation,” among many others.
POETS FOR TEACHERS sessions, reserved for teachers, provide opportunities to discuss with a Festival Poet ways to bring poetry to life inside and outside the classroom.
Approximately 20 Festival Poets will each read two or three poems from the Main Stage during the afternoon POETRY SAMPLER.
In GIVING VOICE readings throughout the day, we remember, with our voices, a group of poets no longer with us. All are welcome to stop by and share in giving them voice.
OPEN READING opportunities for teachers will be available in the afternoon.
The EVENING MAIN STAGE PROGRAM will include half-hour readings by Brenda Hillman, Franz Wright, Jane Hirshfield, Edward Hirsch, and Lucille Clifton.
